Pakistan Elections 2024: Here are Final Updated Results

Pakistan held parliamentary elections on February 8, 2024, with 44 political parties running for 265 seats in the National Assembly. 

It was the country’s 12th general election since its independence 76 years ago.

According to the official result on the Election Commission of Pakistan website, independents led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan won 101 of the 265 seats.  Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N tracked it, which won 75 seats, and the Pakistan People’s Party received 54 seats.

National and Provincial Assembly results

The Election Commission of Pakistan reported that independent candidates won 101 seats. The majority of independents support Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, finished second with 75 seats, while the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) got 54 seats.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan received 17 seats, the Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Pakistan received four seats, the Pakistan Muslim League received three seats, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and the Balochistan National Party each received two seats, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League (Zia-ul-Haq Shaheed), Pashtoonkhwa National Awami Party Pakistan, Balochistan Awami Party, Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, and the National Party received one seat each.

The ECP published the results of 262 out of 266 seats for the NA after the country held general elections on February 8 to elect a government for the next five years.

The country’s election body postponed voting for one seat owing to the death of a candidate, withheld the results for one seat, and announced partial re-voting.

Political happenings after results

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have begun official talks to establish a government at the center, with the support of their allies.

Political manoeuvring peaked after the February 8 election, in which neither party secured a simple majority.  Pakistan’s two largest political parties are arguing over who would become prime minister after inconclusive elections last week prompted them to join forces to secure a majority in a parliament controlled by independents backed by Imran Khan.

Criteria for Prime Minister

To enter office, the next Prime Minister must earn a superficial majority in the Pakistan National Assembly, which equates to 169 votes. 

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan, and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which has endorsed former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as its Prime Minister candidate, are the three political contenders.

None of the country’s three parties will gain the 169 seats required for a majority in parliament, rendering them unable to form a government, leaving it unknown who would be the country’s next prime minister. The results were out more than three days after the polls closed in Thursday’s highly contentious election, which was plagued by violence and claims of vote tampering.

Allegations following elections

Allegations of vote tampering surfaced quickly after the election, with videos and detailed facts from polling places uploaded on social media. 

Neither the PML-N nor the PPP pushed for early results announcements or attempted to publicize their gain or seat count. 

Only the PTI teams earnestly required results from the Election Commission of Pakistan, rallying polling agents and supporters to obtain signed copies of Form 45 and continuously following up with Returning Officers (ROs) until the results were collected and displayed. 

PTI-backed candidates ran as independents, although they made no secret of their support for Imran Khan.

Despite the lack of official leads or later results, PTI teams and several media sites began compiling polling station tallies and openly updated the results. 

Official results began to arrive on February 9 in the morning, and disparities in the results, particularly the number of seats shown against PTI-backed Independent candidates, quickly emerged.  The Election Commission pronounced just 93 PTI-backed candidates winners, even though based on the collation of original Form 45s on February 10, the PTI claimed 170 seats in the National Assembly and voiced belief in forming governments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

What will occur next?

According to the Constitution, Pakistan President Arif Alvi must convene a new session of the National Assembly by February 29. 

Section 91(2) of the Constitution requires the president to summon the National Assembly session within 21 days of the formal announcement of election results or the issuing of notification.  A top official from the National Assembly Secretariat stated they had made necessary preparations for the new assembly’s opening session.

Pakistan Election Body Orders Re-Polling at Many Locations

Following the verification of allegations about voting materials being snatched and damaged, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered that re-elections be at various polling stations across the country.

The highest electoral body has ordered re-voting at some polling sites on February 15.  They will announce the results from these polling stations once the re-polling operation is complete.

Final words

Pakistan has released official election results, with independents associated with Khan’s PTI winning the majority of seats. As the February 8 general elections produced no clear winner, Nawaz Sharif’s political party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has proposed a “participatory coalition government,” claiming that no political party can form a government in the Centre.
